How to Prepare for Your Interview

It starts with your online profile

  • Write a good profile - be specific when describing yourself and your experience.
  • Conduct a thorough spell check.
  • Post a good photo capturing your personality.
  • Be reasonable with the hourly or weekly rate you are asking for.
  • Consider purchasing a background check - some parents will not hire you without one.

Prepare ahead of time

  • Ask your friends who have had babysitting interviews the kind of questions they were asked.
  • Gather interview techniques from the internet.
  • Are you first aid or CPR certified?
  • Plan what you will wear - it is not an office interview so a suit is not called for.  Be comfortable but professional.
  • Make a resume photo book - showing off fun things you did with children at your prior jobs, daycares, preschools, etc.

Meeting the family

  • Make eye contact and smile - show off your confidence.
  • Interact with the children if present - parents want to see you in action.
  • Answer all questions honestly and ask follow-up questions if something is not clear.
  • Be clear on what is expected of you involving discipline - how are you to handle it?
  • Be clear on what is expected of you involving housework - are you required to do any?
  • Be clear on what is expected of you involving pets - do you feed them or clean up after them?
  • Be clear on how to handle medical issues - when to call 911 vs. calling their doctor.
  • Ask how daily rituals will be handled such as meal times, getting ready for bed, baths, etc.
  • Do not be afraid to negotiate pay, especially depending on what city you live in, how many children you will be responsible for and how far you must drive to get there.
  • Offer to show your resume photo book.
  • Supply references upon request.
